Woodside Energy

Helping Woodside reduce dependence on fossil fuels

Offshore microgrid

Complex, Remote Energy Management

Woodside Energy's Goodwin A offshore production platform is located about 135 km off the northwest coast of Australia, operating in highly rugged conditions. A pioneering grid edge solution was designed and implemented to meet the complex needs of remote management, operations and service for the platform.

The world's first offshore microgrid installation, the solution reduces spinning reserve and fuel gas use, lessening the platform's dependency on diesel and lowering gas consumption by 2000 tons per year and CO2 emissions by 5%.

Challenge

Reduce dependency on fossil fuels at the Goodwyn A offshore production platform (135 kms northwest of Western Australia) and develop a proof of concept for application at other offshore platforms and sites

Solution

Develop a Virtual Synchronous Machine custom designed for Oil & Gas operation, that provides spinning reserve in place of operating a gas turbine to supply the offshore platform

Results

Saved 3,000 tonnes of gas fuel per year and reduced CO2 emissions, while enhancing the reliability and flexibility of the offshore platform
